I do NOT think it is controversial. In fact, my stem cell transplant for leukemia used cord blood. I was in a trial for dual cord stem cell transplant, which means I used 2 different units of cord blood, which means 2 different donors.
I fully support donating cord blood to family who needs it and to the public cord blood banks. What I think in controversial is the way private banks convince the parents to privatly bank. It is expenisve (and I understand why). I search the stem cell questions here on yahoo to answer what I can. There are usually people in the parenting sections asking about private banking and to hear them tell it, the sales reps for the private banks are totally not giving them all the information about it.
The people who do think it is controversial are people who dont understand its the cord and afterbirth after a live healthy birth. They think it is coming from aborted babies. When I talk about my transplant it never fails that atleast someone wants to Bible thump me telling me I killed a baby. I fully blame the media for this. The media reports everything they can find about embryonic stem cell research, but rarely mentions adult stem cell research. As a result, the general public doesnt even realize there is such a thing as adult stem cell research.
